Training courses in metrology

Duties of a LAT institutional center include training services for industrial customers. We aim to raise awareness about the importance of measuring instruments, their calibration and inspection activities.

Examples of training courses available:

COURSE – BASIC METROLOGY

Objectives:

  • Provide main concepts in metrology to correctly interpret customer requirements and mandatory requirements
  • Provide rules for a correct presentation of measurements results
  • Understand the need for calibration of measuring instruments
  • Provide criteria for assessing the calibration result
  • Provide rules for evaluating the thermal error
  • Understand how the maximum permissible error of an instrument also depends on its operating modes

  • The International System of Measurement Units
  • Metrology rules
  • General concepts:
  • Measurement, measuring, measuring process, uncertainty, accuracy, error, compatibility of measurements, metrological traceability.
  • Purpose and meaning of calibration and metrological confirmation
  • Meaning and examples of the metrological characteristics of measurement instruments:
  1. -  measuring range
  2. -  unit
  3. -  resolution
  4. -  linearity
  5. -  repeatability
  6. -  hysteresis
  7. -  stability
  8. -  measurement error due to the thermal expansion of the measuring instrument and product
  9. -  formulas for the calculation of the error due to thermal effects in various applications

COURSE – OPERATIONAL METROLOGY

Objectives:

  • Provide an overview of the current EU legislation concerning metrology
  • Provide expertise on the management of the equipment within a quality system and the areas for improvement.
  • Selection of the appropriate measuring instrument to measure a characteristic, through the use of calibration certificates.

Contents:

  • Introduction to Italian and European regulatotions
  • Traceability and MRA
  • Management of measuring instruments in a Quality System, metrological confirmation process (ISO 9001:2008)
  • Errors and uncertainties
  • GPS:  product conformity assessment and measuring instrument selection
  • Analysis of calibration certificates: How to use calibration data in daily practice.

COURSE – EVALUATION OF THE UNCERTAINTY OF MEASUREMENT

Objectives:

  • How to determine the uncertainty of measurement in a measurement process.
  • How to decide which instrument should be purchased to guarantee the quality of the measurement process.
  • How to define the required uncertainty, taking in account costs and benefit.

Contents:

  • Uncertainty basics: the concept of error, uncertainty and metrological traceability, measurement consistency
  • Uncertainty of measurement:
  1. -  type A and B uncertainties categories
  2. -  probability distributions
  3. -  propagation of uncertainty of measurement according to UNI CEI ENV 13005
  4. -  determination of the contribution of uncertainty associated to the maximum permissible error
  • calibration uncertainty
  • correction of systematic errors and numerical regression
  • evaluation of cost – benefit of measurement uncertainty in the inspection process
  • use of “check standard” and interlaboratory comparisons to verify the estimation of measurement uncertainty

COURSE – VERIFICATION OF PRODUCT CONFORMITY AND METROLOGICAL CONFIRMATION

Objectives:

  • Understand the decision-making rules between conformity or non-conformity of products and instruments, related to stated specifications
  • Understand the importance of the evaluation of measurement uncertainty vs. tolerances
  • To understand the proper relationship between uncertainty and tolerance
  • Enable cost analysis in the relationship uncertainty vs. tolerance
  • Being able to perform the verification of conformity of a device for measurement taking into account the calibration uncertainty

Contents:

  • Introduction to the UNI EN ISO 14253-1
  • Definition of measuring, nominal value, compliance, tolerance
  • Basic metrological concepts: the uncertainty of measurement, calibration and instrument performance
  • The concept of safe compliance area, safe non-compliance and ambiguity
  • The relationship between measurement uncertainty and tolerance in the production processes
  • Cost analysis in the process of verification of compliance
  • Conformity assessment of measuring instruments

Tutorial:

Verification of compliance of a product with the tolerances taking into account the measurement uncertainty.
Performance testing of a instrument with respect to the maximum permitted stated on the card tool based on the results of a calibration certificate.
These courses run hroughout the year both in S.D.M. premises and in different locations in Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Emilia. Training is also offered, at request, at the customer site.
